I recently started seeing a Christian counselor again. For me it’s been a wonderful source of accountability to do and practice the things I know I need to, but can come up with a bunch of excuses for not doing them.
My counselor lent me a CD series called “Unfettered.” The author, Kerrie Kenyon, emphasizes that before we can begin to defeat the lies of the enemy that we’re holding on to, we first need to do one thing – bask in God’s love.
In doing her freedom exercise, I realize that this was an area that I was sorely lacking in – the comprehension and understanding that God loves me.
Dr. Caroline Leaf, another resource that my counselor has pointed me to, is a neuroscientist who focuses on how the truths of God’s word change our brain. She says that the brain is wired to take 21 days to adopt a new concept, and then another 42 days to make that concept a permanent memory in the brain.
I challenge each of you to take 21 days and focus on this one thing – how much God loves you. Bask in it. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you new verses and truths that maybe you’ve never considered before. Make it your one goal to just grasp His love for you, for out of that flows everything else.
It’s impossible to reject the lie of perfectionism if you don’t grasp God’s love. It’s impossible to truly forgive and heal from a past hurt if you don’t grasp God’s love for you. Everything hinges on this one truth – “For God so loved the world…”
Ask Him. He’s ready to show you.
