The first step

Anxiety and depression can make us feel stuck. We feel like something is happening to us.

The reality is, we’re doing it to ourselves.

Does that thought surprise you? Have you heard it before? Does it frustrate you?

The first step to overcoming any difficulty in life is to accept responsibility for our part in the matter. With anxiety and depression, biochemistry is most definitely a factor, but science shows that our biochemistry is connected to our thought life – in other words, our thoughts affect our feelings.

Are you still in denial that you are contributing to your feelings of anxiety and depression? Are you still insisting that it’s your circumstances or your parents’ fault? Take responsibility. Own it. Not in a condemning way, for there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. But take ownership for your part in thinking negatively and dwelling on the opposite of Philippians 4:8.

This week, ask the Lord to reveal to you areas in your life where you are avoiding responsibility for your feelings of anxiety and putting it on someone else. Then next week, we will examine the second step in overcoming anxiety and depression – rejecting the lies we believe.

Until next time,

Jacklyn

  1. No doubt Jacklyn- for the promise of the Holy Spirit to renew our minds to occur- we must admit that a change in our thinking is necessary! Thanks for sharing!

About Me

Hi, I’m Jacklyn! This blog has been a safe place for me to process my journey from a single 20-something, to now a 30-something wife and mother. Every day I am choosing to exchange my worry for wonder, and I hope to share a glimpse of that journey to bless your own.
